Why canonicals matter
Duplicate URLs (http vs https, with/without www, trailing slash, tracking params) split your ranking signals across versions. A canonical tag tells Google and AI crawlers which version is the “real” one — consolidating link equity and preventing wasted crawl budget. Always use absoluteURLs, and make sure every page’s canonical points to itself unless it’s a genuine duplicate.
